10 Essential Mechanical Quality Metrics Every Engineer Must Know (Part 2)
In Part 1, we covered scrap rate, rework rate, inspection pass rate, PPM defects, and quality incidents. These indicators focus on production waste and overall output quality.
This article continues with five additional critical quality metrics that help evaluate process capability, supplier performance, and overall quality management effectiveness.
6. Part Processing Defect Rate (Process Yield Rate)
Definition
Process yield rate is calculated by dividing first-pass qualified quantity by total production quantity.
Part processing defect rate is calculated by dividing total defective parts by total input quantity.
Purpose
This metric evaluates the quality level of individual production processes.
Formula
Process Yield Rate (%) = (First Pass Qualified Quantity / Total Production Quantity) × 100%
Part Processing Defect Rate (PPM) = (Defective Parts Quantity / Total Input Quantity) × 1,000,000

7. Customer Inspection First Pass Rate
Definition
The ratio of delivered products accepted by customers during the first inspection to total delivered products.
Purpose
This result metric measures outgoing finished product quality.
Formula
Customer First Pass Rate (%) = (Accepted Quantity at First Inspection / Total Delivered Quantity) × 100%

8. Incoming Material Inspection Pass Rate
Definition
The ratio of qualified incoming materials to total inspected incoming materials during a specific period.
Purpose
This metric monitors supplier quality performance.
Formula
Incoming Inspection Pass Rate (%) = (Qualified Incoming Quantity / Total Incoming Inspection Quantity) × 100%

9. Cost of Quality
Definition
Cost of quality represents failure costs within a defined period.
Purpose
This metric reflects the overall effectiveness of a company's quality management system.
Formula
Cost of Quality = Internal Failure Cost + External Failure Cost
Internal Failure Cost = Scrap Loss + Rework or Repair Cost
External Failure Cost = Customer Return Cost + Product Liability Cost + Complaint Handling Cost
Cost of Quality Ratio (%) = (Cost of Quality / Sales Revenue) × 100%

Batch Defect Rate (%) = (Rejected Batch Quantity / Total Inspection Batch Quantity) × 100%
Key Terms
Inspection Batch: A group of products submitted for inspection, typically with the same model, grade, and production conditions.
Production Batch: A quantity of products scheduled for manufacturing.
